Letβs resume our Decan Walk by exploring the Zodiac Sign of Virgo, and the three Virgo Decans. The cards weβre going to look at are the 8 of Pentacles (Sun in Virgo), the 9 of Pentacles (Venus in Virgo), and the 10 of Pentacles (Mercury in Virgo).
This stretch of the Decan Walk journey is quite meaningful for me because the Sign in my Second House is Virgo, while my Mercury (the planet ruling Virgo) is in my sixth house (Virgoβs natural domain).Β Studying the qualities of Virgo made me realize my connection with Virgoβs discriminating, pattern-seeking energy. πΎ
Virgo Decans: Sun in Virgo + Venus in Virgo + Mercury in Virgo
Letβs begin by first understanding the Zodiac Sign of Virgo, and then understanding its 3 Decans through the lens of the associated Tarot Cards: Sun in Virgo + 8 of Pentacles, Venus in Virgo + 9 of Pentacles, and Mercury in Virgo +10 of Pentacles.

Alright! Letβs begin!
Astrology: Virgo βοΈ
The Sun is in the Zodiac Sign of Virgo usually between August 23rd and September 22nd. This card from the Star Codes Astro Oracle deck beautifully captures Virgoβs essence with hands holding a sheaf of wheat and the keyword βdigest.β
Virgo is an Earth Sign ruled by Mercury, an airy planetβelementally, Earth and Air arenβt naturally compatible, but here we can see a remarkable partnership.
Typically, the image of Virgo shows a woman or goddess holding a sheaf of wheat. This imagery often references Astraea, who, according to Greek Mythology, was the last celestial being to leave Earth at the start of the Bronze Age when she despaired at mankindβs moral decline.
The Symbolism of Wheat
The wheat symbolism is profoundβyou canβt directly consume wheat despite its potential to feed multitudes. The grain must be sorted from the chaff, cleaned, dried, and ground into flour before becoming bread.
This process embodies Virgoβs essential nature: sorting, discerning whatβs valuable, organizing, and paying attention to detail.
Virgo governs the nervous system and intestinal tract, focusing on metabolism, diet, health, and vitality. When we digest food, our bodies discern what nutrients are needed and eliminate what isnβt requiredβthis selective process mirrors Virgoβs discriminating nature perfectly.
Key Virgo traits include:
- Weeding, sorting, harvesting, examining
- Being diligent and specific
- Seeing all parts that make up the whole
- Examining for patterns (this was mind-blowing for me as a Tarot Card Reader!)
- Appreciating what is valuable
- Introspection and self-care
Virgos are practical, analytical, methodical, logical, modest, humble, altruistic, service-oriented, devoted, helpful, caring, responsible, and reasonable. They love solving problems, are self-sufficient, virtuous, and loyal with pure intentions. They desire appreciation and respect for who they are.
On the flip side, they can become nitpicky, critical, obsessive, judgmental, and perfectionistic.
The True Meaning of βVirginβ
The name Virgo derives from the word βParthenos,β which originates from classical Greek myths. Contrary to popular belief, βVirginβ didnβt mean someone who never had sex. Instead, it referred to a woman who didnβt subscribe to patriarchal expectations of marriage and motherhoodβshe maintained independence and personal agency, and was complete in herself.
Examples include Artemis (Goddess of the Hunt), Athena (Goddess of Wisdom & Strategic Thinking), and Hestia (Goddess of the Hearth). These βvirginβ goddesses were independent women who chose their own paths. This concept of female independence existed in ancient Western mythology, challenging modern assumptions about historical gender roles.
Virgo + Tarot: The Hermit
The Zodiac Sign of Virgo is linked to the Major Arcana Tarot card of The Hermit.

All these years, Iβve struggled to see the connection between Virgo and The Hermit. However, while studying for the Decan Walk, I have started to see how it all links up. One thing that I wouldβve liked to see in light of this new understanding was that the image in the card was an Older Woman, considering that the symbolism of Virgo is very feminine. π€·π»ββοΈ However, we can still find the connections within the existing symbolism. The Hermit card typically shows a gray-cloaked figure with a white beard, holding a lamp on snowy peaks.
While looking at the deeper aspects of Virgo, I could see right away thatΒ the connection lies in the introspective energy.
The Hermit seeks solitude for contemplation, processing life experiences, and sorting through wisdomβvery Virgoan activities. In solitude, the Hermit sorts experiences: βThis is useful, this is valuable, this serves no purpose.β This internal processing mirrors Virgoβs discriminating nature. Across all the major Tarot Deck styles, the Hermit holds up a shining lamp.Β That lamp symbolizes the guidance that the Hermit will give you. The Hermit is happy to show you the way when you seek them out, embodying the Wise Old Man archetype.
The Thoth deckβs Hermit card includes Cerberus, the three-headed dog, symbolizing the integration of shadow work. In solitude, we confront our shadow selves, and The Hermit has integrated this aspect. The lamp he holds is beautiful, symbolizing the light of perception. The spermatozoon symbolizes the procreative impulse, the potential of life. We also see the world egg with the snake entwined around it. Weβve also seen this imagery in the Lovers card. It symbolizes the origin of all things, the mystery of creation.
In the Telos Tarot image, we see a similar imagery with a sprouting seed enclosed by a snake eating its own tail. In the Telos Tarot image, we also see the Royal UrΓ¦us Serpent β a symbol of royalty, divinity, protection, and authority. You will often see this symbol on the foreheads of many Egyptian Goddesses and Pharaohs, to symbolize their divine appointment.
The connection between Virgo and The Hermit card becomes clear through shared themes of introspection, solitude, self-care, analysis, pattern recognition, and the discriminating wisdom that comes from examined experience.
Virgo Decan 1: Sun in Virgo: β in βοΈ: Conscious Diligence β Organization Patterns
Letβs start with our first Virgo Decan. Here we meet Sun in Virgo, and it is linked with the 8 of Pentacles in the Tarot.
The first Virgo Decan spans 1Β° to 10Β° of Virgo and covers the period from August 23rd to September 1st. According to the Picatrix, this Virgo Decan is described as: βa virgin maid wearing an old dress and holding a pomegranate in her hand.β
The keywords are: plowing, planting, grass, plants, buildings, wealth, and righteousness.
The Telos Tarot shows this imagery beautifullyβthe maiden with her pomegranate represents economic methodologies yielding interest over time, patient cultivation, attention to detail, and prudent care of small things. The Pomegranate is also quite significant. Weβve seen it prominently in the imagery of the High Priestess card. It represents potential fertility, which is extremely meaningful in this first Virgo Decan.
Astrology: Sun β + Tarot: The Sun
Letβs start with The Sun.
The Sun represents our solar systemβs source energy, ruling Leo and embodying expression, joy, ego, Father, individuality, personality, self-worth, growth, radiance, vitality, stamina, life force, willpower, and conscious wisdom. The Sunβs energy is also about rulership.
Negatively, it can manifest as arrogance, vanity, and attention-seeking.
In the Tarot, the Sun cards typically show children playing, representing childlike expression of radiance and self-expression. The imagery includes bright suns, sunflowers (devotion), and wisdom drops, emphasizing clarity, happiness, creativity, prosperity, and success.

The Sun card in the Tarot has a playful energy. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, we see a single child on a horse. But the Tarot de Marseille, Thoth, and the Telos Tarot card images show two children. All these children, whether on a horse or among themselves, are playing and dancing happily. All the cards feature a bright Sun, with powerful rays that spread light everywhere. The childlike joy and radiance of the Sun children also evoke happiness and playfulness. The Sun card is also about wisdom, clarity, radiance, affluence, prosperity, success, and abundance. The imagery embodies the creative force of the Sun, which can overcome hurdles and be glorious.
Astrology: Sun in Virgo: β in βοΈ
In The Oracle of the Radiant Sun, the card with this combination has the keyword βHealthββSun brings fortune while Virgo provides perfection and service.
This energy evokes a connection with diet, nutrition, and healthy living. These individuals pursue health with Solar radiance and energy. People with this combination will pursue a very healthy lifestyle. They believe that material well-being is a prerequisite for a fulfilling and organized working life. They love cataloguing and organizing, correcting and editing.
All of these are very Virgo attributes, but with the energy of the Sun, they are obviously illuminated and enhanced.
People with the Sun in Virgo are analytical perfectionists who are modest but require respect for their contributions. They enjoy quality things but spend carefully, dedicating their lives to service. However, they can be critical of others who donβt meet their standards and may become hypochondriacal.
The Number: 8
Eight represents transformation, accomplishment, consolidation, refinement, and change. Like the infinity symbol, it suggests ongoing movement toward success through structured effort.
Virgo Decan 1 + Tarot: 8 of Pentacles: Sun in Virgo: β in βοΈ :Β Conscious Diligence β Organization Patterns
Now, letβs bring it all together in our Tarot Card imagery of the 8 of Pentacles.

The Rider-Waite-Smith card image shows an apprentice on his bench, carving pentacles. With each pentacle, we see slight variations indicating steady improvement in the quality of his output. Heβs diligently developing skills through practiceβthe Sun in Virgo energy ensures he puts vitality into perfecting his craft with joyful dedication.
In the Tarot de Marseille, we see eight neatly organized pentacles with flowers and leaves separating them. This represents nourished, flowering success. The uniformity speaks to repetitive small tasks combining into working mechanismsβvery Virgoan organization.
In the Thoth, we see the flowers growing on the tree, in a pattern similar to that of the Tarot de Marseille. In fact, this patternΒ corresponds to the geomantic figure βPopulus,β which is associated with stability, multitudes, and large gatherings of people. Populus takes on the energy of whatever is around it β it goes along with the popular opinions and actions. It conforms to the masses.Β The 8 of Pentacles in the Thoth talks about winning by not doing anything tactically cleverβallowing natural growth through patient cultivation, like fruits ripening with solar nourishment. Other meanings include careful foresight, cautious new beginnings, moderation, skillful patience, negotiation, mature relationships, and realistic expectations.
In the Telos Tarot card image, we return to the diligent maiden with her pomegranate, emphasizing craftsmanship, healthy diet, and attention to detail that brings fruitfulness. Sheβs cultivated the Pomegranates on the tree behind her, which she will soon harvest. We also see a mechanical structure that looks very much like a pomegranate in front of her.
Virgo Decan 1: Sun in Virgo: 8 of Pentacles: Observations
The combination of the Sun in Virgo creates individuals who find genuine joy in the process of refinement and perfection. The Solar energy illuminates and energizes Virgoβs analytical nature, making them naturally drawn to health, organization, and systematic improvement. They donβt just work hardβthey work with radiant purpose.
Virgo Decan 2: Venus in Virgo: β in βοΈ: Enjoying Self-Created Material Comforts β Endurance Ensures Material Advancement
Now, letβs look at the second Virgo Decan, where we have Venus in Virgo. This is also linked with the 9 of Pentacles in the Tarot.
The second Virgo Decan spans 11Β° to 20Β° of Virgo and covers the period from September 2nd to September 11th. The Picatrix describes this Virgo Decan as βa man with nice color, wearing clothes made of animal skins and another made of iron.β
The associated keywords are: working, making a living, saving, but also stinginess and miserliness, and depriving others of their rights.
This is quite interesting β especially when compared to the imagery of the Telos Tarot deck. That image is associated with affluence, lucrative opportunities, a good life, counting blessings, and fruitful commerce. Weβll discuss this card imagery when we examine the linked Tarot Cards.
Iβve often noticed that the meanings of the Decans and the Astrological interpretations donβt always connect or overlap. It is something I struggle to make sense of. I hope I can find a meaningful connection as time goes by. Meanwhile, letβs continue.
Astrology: Venus β + Tarot: The Empress
Venus rules Taurus and Libra, governing love, romance, art, beauty, harmony, femininity, affection, attraction, charm, values, self-worth, creativity, luxury, money, pleasure, and sociability.
Negatively, it can manifest as vanity, manipulation, and superficiality.
In the Tarot, Venus is connected with the Empress card.
The Empress embodies Venus energyβproductive, creative, abundant, surrounded by crops and feminine elements representing motherhood, fertility, and sensuality.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith card image, we see the Empress surrounded by growing crops, beautiful trees, and flowing water β all very feminine elements. She is also pregnant. In the Rider-Waite-Smith and the Tarot de Marseille images, she holds a sceptre. In the Tarot de Marseille, Thoth, and the Telos card images, she has a shield with the image of an Eagle. That symbolizes her rulership over the land. She is theΒ matriarch and Mother Earth. The Empress symbolizes Motherhood, fertility, growth, sexuality, and sensuousness. The Swan in the Thoth image symbolizes pure love and fertility, while the Lotus flowers in the Telos Tarot symbolize spiritual purity.
The Empress embodies the qualities of Venus through herΒ femininity, motherly energy, beauty, arts, love, passion, pleasure and vegetation.
Astrology: Venus in Virgo: β in βοΈ
Here lies an interesting tension: Venus loves indulging in earthly delights while Virgo prefers pragmatic organization. Venus is actually in its fall in Virgo, meaning it can express its more challenging and negative qualities.
The card from the Oracle of the Radiant Sun gives the Venus in Virgo combination the keyword of βdiscriminationβ. With this combination, emotions are over-analyzed. While people with this combination can make excellent relationship counselors, they tend to prefer romantic partners who share similar intellectual interests. Their love is practical, selective, and choosy.
Many fashion designers also have this placement, which makes sense considering that they need to have a very analytical perspective on beauty and art. Another profession could be an art curator in a museum. This placement can also talk about makeovers.
Venus in Virgo people can be fastidious but excellent cooks, combining Venusβs love of food with Virgoβs health consciousness.
People with Venus in Virgo are selective about friendships, potentially having workplace romances, but can be critical when Venusβs shadow emerges in Virgoβs analytical environment. They also prefer to have harmonious work environments.
The Number: 9
Nine represents culmination, completion, rewards, consequences, and humanitarian impulses. Itβs the reward for previous actionsβthe final result, whether positive or negative.
Virgo Decan 2 + Tarot: 9 of Pentacles: Venus in Virgo: β in βοΈ : Enjoying Self-Created Material Comforts β Endurance Ensures Material Advancement

The Rider-Waite-Smith card shows the image of a βWoman of Independent Meansββquite remarkable for 1910 (when this deck was published) because back then women didnβt even have the right to manage their money or even vote. It is in such an environment that this lady has created material success through her own abilities. Standing in a grape vineyard (luxury), holding a hunting bird (long-term vision), with a snail (steady progress) nearby, she represents someone who worked diligently to create abundance through careful planning.
I think back to the classical meaning of the word βVirginβ, and here, this card totally embodies the independent woman who is complete in herself.

6 of Pentacles

3 of Pentacles
I also love to see the way the Pentacle coins have been arranged: one group of six coins and another of 3 coins. It links to the 6 of Pentacles and the 3 of Pentacles.
In the 6 of Pentacles, the merchant judiciously balanced his giving and taking while giving the coins to the beggars. Meanwhile, in the 3 of Pentacles, the Priest, the Architect, and the Sculptor manifest the building through teamwork and sharing of ideas, resources, and skills.
You could say that when the lady in this card image received the money and resources, she worked harmoniously with her team and manifested this beautiful material reality.
The Tarot de Marseille card image features two groups of four pentacles, with one central coin surrounded by protective leaves and emerging flowers. This card is about ambition and the desire to advance. The two groups of four coins bring stability and support, and help nourish the central coin. That coin is given the space to grow and flourish. The 8 Coins have organized the resources and are moving forward with the 9th Coin. Thus, the image represents advancing beyond conformity with unconventional ideas that have advancement potential.
The Thoth card image has the keyword βGain,β showing two groups of three coins plus three energy orbsβthree sets of threes representing ongoing creative cycles bringing continuous results. Here, they solidify and materialize the prospects for success. This is the material manifestation of luck, fulfillment, and lucrative opportunities.
In the Telos card imagery, we see affluence, lucrative opportunities, and fruitful commerce. Here, we see a tall, fair, large man with a woman who holds a large black oil jar. The coins have been distributed interestingly, too: the man holds two coins, the woman holds one, while six coins are arranged on the ground in a pyramid shape. We could say she has the seed energy of the Ace, which he juggles in the 2 of Coins, to generate the necessary capital of the 6 of Coins. Altogether, we are looking at fruitful commerce, reaping what was sown and enjoying a good life. Good management leads to rewards and financial luck, comfort, inheritance, and business planning that can turn small things into profitable commodities. Thus, despite Venus being in fall in Virgo, something tangibly valuable emerges through Virgoan diligence.
Virgo Decan 2: Venus in Virgo: 9 of Pentacles: Observations
Venus in fall in Virgo creates an interesting paradoxβthrough the very challenges of this placement, extraordinary results emerge. The analytical approach to love and beauty, while sometimes difficult, produces lasting value and refined taste.
Virgo Decan 3: Mercury in Virgo: βΏ in βοΈ: Generational Wealth & Abundance β Successful Material Accomplishments
Now letβs look at the 10 of Pentacles. This is linked with Mercury in Virgoβand remember, Mercury rules Virgo, so this is a powerful placement.
The first Virgo Decan spans 21Β° to 30Β° of Virgo and covers the period from September 12th to September 22nd. The Picatrix describes this Virgo Decan as βa large white man wrapped in a rope and a woman holding a black fawn for sacrifice.β
This decan is associated with old age, weakness, chronic illness,Β uprooting trees, and destruction of buildings.
The Telos deck card image, on the other hand, emphasizes wealth and prosperity instead. While we do see an old man wearing a robe, he stands on the images of the Tree of Life and the Flower of Creation from Kabbala and Sacred Geometry.
Astrology: Mercury βΏ + Tarot: The Magician
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, governing the mind, intellectual stimulation, communication, learning, business, commerce, adaptability, and transitions.
Mercury is an Air planet. Thus, this planet is about mental activity, common sense, reason, expression, communication, speech, writing, learning habits, skills, and curiosity. Mercury rules travel, commerce, and business. Right? Mercury emphasizes change, adaptability, versatility, agility, and transitions. Mercury is a Psychopomp β able to travel through all three realms due to his unique duties as the Messenger God.
Negatively, it can be fickle, superficial, and dishonest. Thinking can become shallow and scattered. Prejudices can take over. Mistakes can happen when you rush or hurry through your activities.
The Magician from the Tarot embodies Mercuryβable to channel energies into practical, creative results through will and manifestation, though sometimes tricksterish.

The images of The Magician from the Rider-Waite-Smith and the Tarot de Marseille cards show a person holding a wand with a table in front of him that has a few items. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, the items are a Wand, a Sword, a Cup, and a Pentacle: the four Suits of a Tarot Card Deck. In the Tarot de Marseille, the Magician has some coins, a couple of knives, a couple of cups, along with a bag that may contain more goodies. While the Rider-Waite-Smith Magician uses his infinite knowledge to manifest flowers, the Marseille Magician uses misdirection (his eyes look in another direction) and sleight of hand (while his hands hide a coin), to perform a trick. Ultimately, both of them astound their audience with a trick that feels magical.
In the Thoth card image, we meet Hermes flying through the realms, the Suit elements powering him through his journey. In theΒ Telos card image, we meet Hermes playing tricks with light and shadow.
The Magician thus embodies the trickster energies of Mercury in very creative ways. This card talks of leadership, creativity, communication, mental agility, perceptiveness, proficiency, and the ability to manifest reality. He represents the creative power of words and thoughts. He transmits knowledge, skills, and messages.
Astrology: Mercury in Virgo: βΏ in βοΈ
Mercury is in its domicile (home Sign) and is also considered exalted in Virgo, making it extremely powerful. Mercuryβs creative thinking abilities find a welcome home in the analytical space of Virgo. While Mercury may not find Virgo to be as playful as Gemini, Virgo gives Mercury the space to use his abilities in powerful and practical ways.
The keyword for Mercury is Change, while Virgo is linked with Perfection and Service. Together, they create the ability for analysis and communication that serves and helps.
The Oracle of the Radiant Sun shows the keyword βCautionβ on the card image. We see a crowned woman, the Earth mother, holding her hand up to protect a group of small antelopes from jackals. Their sudden movements attract danger.
Mercury in Virgo creates sharp analytical minds with excellent reasoning ability. They excel at sorting chaos into order and have talents for writing, teaching, and communication. They carefully examine all angles before acting and often have multiple skills. This placement talks of skills, acquired skills, specialized knowledge, specialized mental work, craft, and cataloging. This placement likes efficiency and restoring order. They carefully examine the pros and cons of a problem before taking any action.
However, they can become tremendously manipulative, potentially skilled at using data and analysis to their advantage.
The Number: 10
Ten combines One (beginnings, primal spark) with Zero (raw material, unmanifested creation). This creates major transitions, success and failure, completion and excess, accumulation and dissolution. Itβs both ending and beginningβself-seeking One becomes a self-aware Ten.
Virgo Decan 3 + Tarot: 10 of Pentacles: Mercury in Virgo: βΏ in βοΈ : Generational Wealth & Abundance β Successful Material Accomplishments

TheΒ Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot imageΒ features the Tree of Life imagery from Kabbalahβthe diagrammatic representation of world manifestation. We see three generations (grandfather, parents, child), along with loyal dogs who could also represent friends and employees. On the archway, we see a castle and boats, representing generational wealth earned through trade (very Mercury).
On the Tarot de Marseille card image, we see two groups of five coins, with a central flower connecting them. Each group could even be seen as four coins with a single pentacle in the centre. The leaves emerging from the central flower separate the coins into two groups of 3 coins and four single coins. We can even see a combination of 6 coins in the centre with 4 coins at the 4 corners. All of these coin combinations generate many interpretations. This image depicts a lot of preoccupation with financial and practical issues and intense practical activities. There is stability with the possibility for more gains. This abundance represents sophisticated financial strategies and parallel income streams.
In the Thoth card imagery, we again see the imagery of the Tree of Life, surrounded by coins in the background. This is interpreted as solid success, wealth, secure circumstances, successful business deals, a great working environment, and stable relationships.
The Telos Tarot card imagery shows material prosperity channeled toward legacy building, acquisitions, and philanthropy. The old man stands on the Flower of Life symbol, aware of creationβs process through lifelong experience.
Virgo Decan 3: Mercury in Virgo: 10 of Pentacles: Observations
Mercury thrives in Virgo, creating material prosperity through analytical business acumen and systematic thinking rather than luckβtrue Virgoan accomplishment. This represents the culmination of Virgoβs journey from apprentice to independent success to generational legacy.
Virgo Decans + Tarot: The Supporting Cards
Ace of Wands + Page of Wands + King of Pentacles + Queen of Swords
The Ace of Wands brings passionate fire energy to support the growth of Earth signsβwithout that creative spark, Virgoβs earth cannot flourish. The Page of Wands represents experimentation and learning, showing off developing skillsβvery aligned with the 8 of Pentacles apprentice energy. The King of Pentacles is practical, systematic, confidentβvery Virgoan in his steady, methodical pursuit of material success. Additionally, the Queen of Swords, who is Water of Air, combines heart and head, compassionate but enforcing her boundaries, embodies the independent βvirginβ energy. She can think analytically while maintaining emotional wisdom, enforcing boundaries with love.

While the Ace of Wands and Page of Wands support all the cards in the Virgo Decans, the King of Pentacles supports the 8 of Pentacles (Sun in Virgo) and 9 of Pentacles (Venus in Virgo), while the Queen of Swords supports the 10 of Pentacles (Mercury in Virgo). Together, the Wands cards provide the energetic passion and enthusiasm to fuel Virgoβs analysis. The King of Pentacles is the necessary practical foundation for both the 8 of Pentacles Apprentice and the 9 of Pentacles Independent Woman to stand on. The Queen of Swords enforces her compassionate boundaries with the Mercantile Family of the 10 of Pentacles, curbing Mercuryβs wildness and helping Virgo relax a little so they can experiment.
